Arrrr Matey

Well, it took me all day, but I made a pirate. Im not quite sure how I feel about it, kinda plain.  I guess I could add a hat, but im done for today!  Its so much more fiddly than the girls.  I have to make little doll pants and they take up quite a lot of time.  It took me two hours just to get the pattern right!  The shoulders are weird and I am not sure how to fix it.  Maybe its just the way I stuffed it now that I look at it.  With the girlies, it does not matter as I join the head last and cover the seams with frills, but this guy does not have frills so I need to attach the head first.  I dont know, it just looks weird to me.  Oh well at least I tried and not too bad for my very first attempt.

I will stick to the girls for now and see how I go.  Meanwhile, please let me know what you think.

Custom Doll for K

Good morning all,

I had the pleasure of making my first custom doll for little girl K.  I worked with her mom to pick the colors and fabric and it turned out so sweet!  This is a christmas gift and I am sure she will love it.  If you would like a custom order, you can email me at sarirosedolls@gmail.com or convo me through my Etsy store.

New Fabrics

I am in New Zealand currently and will return home tommorrow.  It was a last minute trip. I had a chance to go to a local fabric shop while I am here and picked up some cute new fabrics.  I will get some new girls stared next week!

One of my very first dolls (well the first one that was good enough) which is the doll featured in the profile pic on my fan page, now has a permanent new home in the room of my adorable neice! I was so happy to give her this doll, it is my favourite one so far. I hope to see her playing with it when she's older.  Love that little mite.

Farewell from New Zealand!

Before they are them

Hi! I am working on four new girlies.  Incase you are wondering, each doll takes me around three hours to make if I make one at a time.  But now, I make batches and I do them over several days and they take a lot less time.  All four are all laid out waiting to be bought to life. I have a small window of time I can sew as my youngest daughter pulls on the machine cords or insists on sitting on my knee, so I have to wait until shes napping or after shes in bed which is when I prefer to sit a relax with my hubby or watch reality television (yes confession time)

Why do they take so long you ask? well im sure after I have made thousands I can just whip them up quick.  But they include alot of thread color changes and little fiddly bits which take up the bulk of the time.  Sewing them together actually takes no time at all, its cutting out the pieces, placing and pinning.  Sometimes I remove their heads two or three times just to get it to sit right!  so after I stock my shop I hope to make a million arms, legs, faces and bodies so I can just put them together whenever I have spare time.

Here is what a doll looks like after all the pattern pieces have been cut.

See ya later!

Welcome!

Welcome to the blog for Sari Rose Dolls!

I am a stay at home mom to two little girls.  I love to make things for them and our home.  Seeing the joy of someone opening a gift that I have made is just wonderful.

I was never really taught to sew by anyone, I just learned.  I did a class in school so I kind of knew the basics, but had no idea how to actually make something. Thats where the internet is so helpful.  Youtube and Ehow are amazing and you can pretty much learn anything if you have the time, tools and patience.  I started making burpcloths, nursing covers, bibs and baby blankets.  They were pretty simple.  Then I went on to cushion covers for the couch. A good friend of mine runs a pattern business Sweet Sew Patterns and I tried a few of her dress patterns for my girls.  I can pretty much learn anything within my limits as long as im shown the basics and have instructions so that's why her patterns are so great, they have step by step instructions.

My eldest daughter is the inspiration for these dolls.  I bought a doll for her and after looking at it I knew I could make one. I figured out the basic parts of the doll and knew I had to make a pattern.  I kind of guessed it and I can tell you that some of my first dolls had giant heads, small bodies, crooked arms, short legs and wonky smiles.  The patterns were cut out of old cereal boxes! I estimate that I made five or so dolls before I got it right.  The dolls in my shop are actually a second generation. I think the are the best so far, and as I get more confident I may add more styles like ladybugs, princesses, christmas themes and mermaids.  I just have to figure out some more patterns, which will take alot of time and weird looking dolls im sure. I love fabrics and made the dolls originally with white flannel faces and arms.  It just did not look right.  I found some wool suiting at a nearby store and although its a tad pricey, it gives the dolls a much better look.  The feedback has been positive so I am moving along making some more girlies and hope to have a fully stocked shop soon.  I just need to sell some! So please help me spread the word.

I am thinking of doing a giveaway, any suggestions?

Enjoy.
